Why "The Doctor"? Because that's all what's known about this
particular Bettie Page photographer. The person who sold these
Bettie Page 35mm negatives would only reveal that the photographer
was a doctor from Upstate New York who did not want his identity
publicized. It's the same story I've heard over and over with many
Bettie Page photographers. Some are embarrassed or frightened by
what they did. If you put yourself in their shoes, it's easy to see
why. Years ago you go to a clandestine meeting place and take
questionable photographs where women were prancing around without
clothing. You may have done this during your college years or while
you were married without your wife knowing. Later, you get a nice
practice and treat many patients throughout the years. From their
viewpoint, it can be seen why hey wouldn't want their name attached
to a series of 36 ss of Bettie Page. His wife may not have ever
known of his hobby. These photos are pretty racy if you take away
any comparisons to todays figure photography. in some of the scans,
Bettie Page is wearing see-through underwear and in others a set of
fishnets without any underwear at all. For some people like
Sam Menning
who photographed figure models professionally, it really didn't
matter what other people thought.
Many thanks to RMW who has made a nice contribution (see 065). He
combinded five of the scans to come up with his version!
