Most of the photographs on this page are from the team Lehnert &
Landrock. They met in Switzerland in 1904 and both were interested in
the "Orient" or the "Near East", a portion of which is located roughly
in northern Africa. Both enjoyed travel, archeology, exploration,
photography and the Orient which was shared by many Europeans in the
early 1900s. Together they headed off in 1905 to the lands of Tunisia,
Egypt, Algeria etc... and created a huge photographic library of work
that recorded a time in a land that was still largely unaffected by
modern civilization. Rudolf Lehnert (1878) took the photographs while
Ernst Landrock (1878) administered the business side of their
partnership. Lehnert photographed everything from daily activities,
landmarks and s. They had a store in Tunisia then later relocated to
Cairo Egypt. Together they conquered the world with their photographs. A
good portion of this infiltration came through postcards. Along with the
postcard photographs, they sold larger silver, sepia toned albumen,
platinum and selenium toned prints. They dissolved their partnership in
1930. Lehnert became a portrait photographer in Tunis. Landrock
continued to sell photographs in Cairo. Landrock's heirs are still
operating the store to this day. The store is named "L&L" and is
located at on the western side of Sherif Street close to the
intersection with July 26 street. Once Inside you'll see books. Keep
going to the back room and there you'll find the photographs.
